THOUGH THE OZONE LAYER IS HEALING…….

THE ozone layer is the world’s first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and its deterioration led to significant increases in the amount of UVR that reached the earth’s surface…  by the mid-1990′s, levels on an average clear day in temperate zones had increased by about seven percent from the 1970′s.

Now, thanks to international efforts spurred by the  Montreal Protocol, UV levels are only three to four percent higher than in the 1970′s.

However, this is no reason for any of us to slack on sun protection. First, that is still a significant increase in UV exposure from the past. And, scientific models project that  ozone levels in the northern temperate zones will  not fully recover until about 2050.

Secondly, skin cancers were already reaching epidemic levels worldwide BEFORE ozone depletion became an issue. No matter how effective the ozone layer may be at filtering out the sun’s UVB radiation, enough still reaches the earth to damage our skin!  What’s more, though UVB levels vary seasonally, the sun’s UVA radiation significantly penetrates the ozone layer YEAR-ROUND, so that we are always exposed to UVR can pass through clouds that appear to block the sun, so YOU CAN SUNBURN EVEN ON AN APPARENTLY CLOUDY DAY!

That is why the Skin Cancer Foundation advises people of ALL skin types to:   (a) SEEK the shade from 10 am to 4 pm (b) Use UV-blocking sunglasses: ( c) SPF 15+ sunscreen ( d) Wide-brimmed hats  (e) Other sun-protective clothing when outside - in ALL weather….Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

IMPORTANT!!  All-natural materials in the form of 100% organic cotton, 100% cotton, bamboo, hemp, soy, corn and tee shirts, bermudas, shorts, slacks, and shoes, PLUS  eco-green skin, health and beauty products, and sunblocks which automatically prevent UVA and UVB rays from penetrating thru to your skin. (These  all-natural products are  on my website, under varying above tabs.)

I would like to note here, that there are varying types of sunscreens, and only 112 sunscreens in the world are considered to be the best. (Contributed by the American Skin Institute’s survey taken by them in 2011.)  Two of them, so far, are on the above tab under tab name: “SUNSCREENS” …Look for  ‘Drugstore.com’ and ‘Beauty.com’. ‘Sephora’, another of my Advertisers has an excellent sunscreen as well. FYI: All sunscreens are NOT alike; many manufacturers state false claims/ingredients, etc. And, in addition, these two sunscreens need to be applied only ONCE a day, versus every TWO HOURS from other lesser quality sunblocks. Information in this blog was contributed by the Skin Cancer Foundation May 2012.

The ABCDE’s of Melanoma Cancer:

Definition of ‘MELANOMA’ – A tumor containing dark pigment; A highly malignant tumor that starts in melanocytes of normal skin or moles and metastasizes rapidly and widely to mostly all parts of the body.
Contributed by Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11/06

Graph: Asymmetry-One half unlike the other half; Border-Irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border; Color-
Varied from one area to another; shades of tan and brown, black and sometimes white, red and blue.
Diameter-While melanomas are usually greater than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser)when diagnosed,
can be smaller. And last, Evolving-A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest or is
changing in size, shape, or color.

Over 2 million Americans alone were diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer in the year 2010. The stats are not yet recorded for 2011…8,633 of them died from it. one person out of every three will get skin cancer at some point in their lifetime.

Thus, the reason for my website. On my website are many advertisers who are either manufacturers or distributors of ‘all-natural’ apparel, such as bamboo, hemp, soy, corn, birch, 100% organic cotton ~ All of these materials keep the very dangerous UVA and UVB rays from penetration to one’s body.
Also, wear a brimmed hat, NOT a baseball cap. And, by applying sunscreen, (most have to be applied every two-hours…. More expensive sunscreens need be applied once a day only.), wearing all-natural 100% organic cotton, etc. apparel, you will be protected as much as one can be with those cancer-bearing rays in the sun’s
path.

Other ways of avoiding skin cancer: 30% GOOD sunscreen, one which you only have to apply once a day. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, who did a recent study on sunscreens manufactured all over the world, they found only 112 GOOD sunscreens, with true advertising for the enclosed ingredients. Following are (6) or(7) that I am endorsing on my website.

A good sunscreen by Shiseido: “Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection Cream N SPF 38″; Garnier Nutritioniste “Anti-Sun Damage Daily Moisture Lotion SPF 28″; Johnson’& Johnson’s “Baby Daily Face and Body Lotion SPF 40″; “Oil of Olay” Complete Defense SPF 30 UV Moisturizer Sensitive Lotion; ‘PCA Skin’ – Active water/sweat resistant SPF 45. And, “KINeSYS Performance Sunscreen” is certainly one of the best, the one I use, can be found on above ‘tab’ or ‘page’ under “EcoBeauty/Skin/Sunscreens”…..

Also, don’t forget this: The sun is evident even on cloudy days, 365 days per year. And don’t forget to get checked on by a thorough Dermatologist at least once a year.

Ultraviolet Radiation Facts 2011

ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION FACTS ~ Newest  Results – 2011
Everyone is exposed to naturally occurring solar UVR,  although much of this exposure can be controlled. The extent of an
individual’s exposure to sunlight is determined by personal behaviors (e.g., sunbathing), as well as occupational circumstances. Environmental factors such as time of day, season, geographic location, altitude, temperature, and other weather conditions also affect the amount of solar radiation individuals receive. The negative effects of UVR are cumulative over a lifetime.

The immediate adverse effects of excessive UVR exposure include sunburn, eye damage, and suppression of the immune system, while the long-term effects include premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Personal exposure to UVR encompasses a large variety of behaviors during times of leisure, while at work or doing work around the house. In general, these behaviors have been grouped into two broad categories: intentional and non-intentional UVR exposures.

Epidemiological studies show that cutaneous melanoma occurrence is associated more with intentional UVR exposure, which is motivated by the desire to acquire a tan by exposing significant portions of the trunk, shoulders, and limbs for extended periods of time (e.g., sunbathing and indoor tanning). Squamous cell carcinoma occurrence has been associated with non-intentional sun exposures that occur during daily outdoor activities in sunny conditions (e.g., gardening or outdoor workers). Basal cell carcinoma occurrence has been associated with both types of sun exposure.
Sunburns typically occur as a result of excessive sun exposure on unprotected or poorly protected skin. They are characterized by skin redness (erythema), which occurs three to five hours after UVR exposure. Depending on the extent of UVR exposure, sunburns can range from mild to blistering and painful. Sunburns during childhood and intense intermittent sun exposure increase the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers later in life.  A meta-analysis of 57 studies indicated a two-fold increased risk for melanoma among persons with a history of sunburn, compared to those without sunburn history.

The susceptibility of the skin to UVR damage, including sunburns, is higher among individuals with fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, the presence of moles and freckles, or a history of severe sunburns. Individual strategies to help reduce UVR exposure include use of protective clothing and seeking the shade and use of broad-spectrum sunscreens as an adjunct form of sun protection.

While sunscreen products used properly can provide protection from sunburns, skin can still be damaged by prolonged stays in the sun. Moreover, where there is intentional UVR exposure without control of time spent in the sun (e.g., a day at the beach), sun seekers should be advised not to deliberately prolong their time in the sun regardless of having applied
sunscreen. To minimize the harmful effects of excessive and unprotected sun exposure, sun protection behaviors should be a lifelong practice.  Contributed by the American Cancer Society 12/20/11 ~Newest Update

In addition, the following:

Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays.  What is the difference between the rays?

  • Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth – ultraviolet A (UVA) rays and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Overexposure to either can lead to skin cancer. In addition to causing skin cancer, here’s what each of these rays do:
    • UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, and can pass through window glass.
    • UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass.
  • The United States Department of Health & Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer have declared ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and artificial sources, such as tanning beds and sun lamps, as a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance).
  • There is no safe way to tan. Every time you tan, you damage your skin. As this damage builds, you speed up the aging of your skin and increase your risk for all types of skin cancer.

WHY 'ORGANIC' COTTON????...

Why Organic Cotton

Cotton is thought to be a very natural fabric however conventional cotton-growing is one of the most chemically intensive farming operations in the world. Since cotton is the one of the most widely traded commodity (nearly half of all textile products produced), conventional cotton-growing leads to massive environmental and health problems.

Environmental research has shown that the extensive and intensive use of synthetic fertilizers, soil additives, defoliants and other substances used to produce conventional cotton wreaks serious havoc on soil, water, and air. These chemicals drift into neighboring communities, posing long-term health threats to people and animals. They also indirectly enter the human food chain through cottonseed in livestock feed, contaminating meat and dairy products. (Cottonseed oil is also used in many processed food products.) The problems with clothing production do not stop in the field.

During the conversion of conventional cotton into clothing, numerous toxic chemicals are added at each stage – silicone waxes, harsh petroleum scours, softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde.

.Here are some reasons why organic cotton production is important to the long-term health of the planet:  Cotton uses approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides, and defoliants.).

•It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just ONE  Tee shirt!!

•The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin). (EPA)

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. “Working with, not against,” nature is the principle behind organic farming. Grown without pesticides and spun without chemicals, organic farmers rely on organic fertilizers, manual crop rotation and integrated pest management. Fields are naturally fertilized, pest-eating insects are used to naturally control crop damage, and weeds are removed with hoes and tractors, as well as manually. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Farms earn the organic label by using soil that has been free of synthetic pesticides for at least three consecutive years. Organic cotton is pure, natural and more breathable for delicate skin. Pesticide and chemically-treated clothing, diapers and bedding block the natural balance of the skin by trapping heat and preventing it from “breathing,” (i.e. absorbing adequate moisture), often causing rashes and eczema on sensitive babies’ skin.

Grown and processed without toxic chemicals, organic cotton is free from synthetic poisons that could be absorbed into the bloodstream by contact with the user’s skin. All of our organic cotton products are also free of irritating or damaging colors and dyes. Additionally, on chemical-use cotton farms, farmers are constantly exposed to synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, endangering them and their families. In developing countries, poor, untrained and ill-equipped farmers are often forced to deal with the most hazardous of chemical agricultural agents. Organic farms are chemical fertilizer- and pesticide-free, keeping their soil and water protected and usable for longer periods of time.

Organic cotton clothing lasts longer due to its natural composition. The cotton that is grown in conventional ways is compromised and weakened by the chemicals used in growing, processing and dying of the cotton, all these things break the fiber down and create a weaker, inferior cotton garment.

Organic cotton is softer, thicker cotton that is sturdier than thinner conventional cotton that gets worn much quicker from use and washing. And, the number one thing about ‘Organic Cotton’ is that being an all-natural fiber, it will keep the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, which cause melanomas i.e.,  skin cancer, from  penetrating your skin, as your skin is covered by organic cotton, or hemp, soy, corn, birch apparels, whichever one  you are wearing, as ALL of these fibers are organic.

NOTE:  The American Cancer Society states that over 200,000 Americans were affected by skin cancer in 2010, and that over 8,000 Americans DIED from skin cancer. The stats for 2011 have not yet been tallied, but the ratio is no doubt even higher for 2011.

BAMBOO CLOTHING AND ITS PROPERTIES

Bamboo clothing – facts about that ” intriguing”  fiber….BAMBOO ~

… The world’s fastest growing plant!!!

Bamboo has been used for many different applications for centuries, but bamboo clothing is relatively new, developed just in the last few years.
The Value and Health of bamboo clothing:

Excellent moisture management – clothing made from bamboo can absorb and evaporate perspiration very fast. The cross section of the bamboo fiber has various micro-gaps and holes, which enables moisture absorption and ventilation, better than cotton!
It is anti-bacterial with a unique anti-bacterial agent named “kun”. This substance bonds tightly with bamboo cellulose during the fiber growth and is retained in fabric. (That’s totally different from any chemical additives used sometimes in garments, causing skin allergy.)
Bamboo clothing has anti-UVA and UVB rays, which cause melanomas, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer,  effect and anti-static properties, increased by its excellent moisture absorption.
Bamboo clothing is very suitable for sensitive skin, since there are no harsh chemical treatments which can irritate skin surface,  as well as smooth and round fibers which are easy on the skin. With its great absorption of water, it keeps skin comfortable, helping contain perspiration and odor. Other fibers, such as hemp, soy, and 100% cotton wearables, sunscreens, and brimmed hats has been proven to keep the harmful rays of the sun from penetration to your body.

FASHION:    Bamboo clothing is very soft and smooth, with bit of sheen similar to silk or cashmere. With anti-static properties it does not cling to the body and drapes really well, complementing the shape. It also moves freely enhancing the style of the garment. This fiber fascinates many designers who work with bamboo.

ENVIRONMENT:  As a plant, bamboo has incredible properties – it is considered the fastest growing plant on earth and is known to improve soil quality. Its extensive root system naturally replenish itself and is grown without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. It’s actually a grass and some varieties can grow up to 3 – 4 feet a day. Bamboo minimizes CO2 and generates up to 35% more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees. Bamboo can even improve soil quality in places where erosion and degradation of the natural minerals has occurred. It needs very little water to grow, which means it can thrive in a variety of climates without depleting water supplies.

There is a lot of attention about manufacturing textiles from bamboo.

My next blog will be about the properties of ‘HEMP’…

GLOBAL WARMING AND ORGANIC & RECYCLED CLOTHING

FYI: The Importance of Buying Organic Clothing…
Buy organic clothing for the health of our planet; wear organic clothing for your health.

The reality and perils of global warming have finally broken through the walls surrounding mainstream collective consciousness and have become hot news. Recently, we were contacted by a journalist working on an article for Time magazine about Global Warming wanting to know if organic clothing could help reduce global warming.

Conventional news stories about global warming generally fail to recognize that global warming is just one of several serious symptoms of a dangerously dysfunctional family relationship between industrialized and industrializing peoples and their Mother Earth. Global warming is caused by pollution of the Earth’s air. Other symptoms of this dysfunctional relationship include pollution of the Earth’s waters in our oceans, rivers and ground waters; pollution of the Earth’s agricultural lands with toxic pesticides, herbicides and insecticides; and destruction by clear cutting of life-giving ecosystems such as rainforests and old growth forests.

So, what would be the impact on Global Warming if everyone stopped buying conventional chemical clothing and gradually replaced their worn out conventional clothing with pure organic clothing? Minor. The raising and production of organic natural fibers and their manufacturing into fabric and apparel would have a small impact on improving Global Warming.

All the hazardous and toxic chemicals involved in conventional cotton clothing contributes hugely to poisoning our planet’s agricultural lands, turning ground water and rivers into potentially carcinogenic waste waters, causing the deaths of tens of thousands of agricultural workers worldwide, encouraging the social pollution of sweatshops, and aggravating chemical sensitivities and health problems in a growing number of people wearing conventional chemical clothing.

THE ABC'S OF ORGANIC CLOTHING

What makes clothing organic?

Organic clothing comes from all-natural materials (no synthetics like polyester or rayon) and there are no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, radiation, or genetically modified organisms used when growing the cotton/hemp/linen, or whatever plant we’re talking about.

Organic certification is complicated. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton is grown in 12 countries, with Turkey and the United States leading the pack. There are a number of certifying bodies around the globe including: Demeter (Europe), KRAV (Sweden), Naturland (Germany), SKAL (Netherlands), The Soil Association (England), The Japan Organic Cotton Association, The International Natural Textiles Association (Germany), the USDA, and more. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) strives to create international standards, and certifies the certification schemes of individual nations.

The Institute for Market Ecology provides on-location certification on behalf of many of the organizations listed above, and according to the Organic Cotton Blog, is certifying Walmart’s and Sam’s Club cotton.

The Organic Trade Association has developed certification for fiber processing. What does this mean? Clothes certified organic will arrive having been processed, dyed, transported, etc. in the most non-toxic manner possible.

What are the various meanings of “sustainable” and “organic” clothing? Check out this informative examination from the Organic Clothing Blog. The Fiber and Fabrics section in general is a great place to learn about hemp, wool, bamboo… And the associated Lotus Organics Clothing, Fiber and Fashion glossary contains most of the fiber definitions you would ever need.

Global Warming and Organic & Recycled Clothing ~

'GREEN' STEPS FOR ALL...

To the dump. Millions of tons of clothing are tossed each year into garbage landfills where they rot and produce methane gas which is one of the by-products from the decomposition of organic materials. A major driving force to stuff landfills with used clothes is the “fast fashion” industry. Fast fashion is the trend to produce low cost, low quality, quickly changing fashion trends that can change several times in a single season. Low cost, mass market companies such as Old Navy, Target and Wal-Mart carefully target young, budget-conscious clothes hogs who load their shopping carts with the latest cheap clothing in the very latest colors and styles. When the next latest new trend appears in a couple months or, Heaven forbid!, a small hole appears in that too cute Smocked Babydoll Tank Top in Spunk Yellow from Mossimo Supply Co. at Target’s for $8.99 just chuck it out. I mean, it costs less than a movie ticket. Of course, at this price it probably was made in a sweatshop.
Green Steps: Consumers of all ages must become aware that cheap, fast fashion comes at a very high cost to the environment and to exploited garment workers around the world. Recycling must become a pillar of our consumer culture … especially in the U.S. where the recycling rate of household waste is less than 5%. In England, families recycle about 9% of their household garbage (including discarded clothing), in Holland it is 30%, and in Switzerland it is 57%. Recycling is a critical component of sustainability. All product designers, including fashion designers, must design sustainability and recyclability into all products beginning with the selection of materials and manufacturing processes. Think green clothing, sustainable clothing, recycled clothing.

Do You Know 'The Difference' in Sun Rays???

The following is a VERY important read:

Yes, 90% of all visible skin aging comes from exposure to UVA and UVB. Most people now know that there is a difference between UVA and UVB and that SPF rated sunscreens only protect against the burning UVB (UV-Burning ) rays. They do nothing to protect from the deep penetrating UVA (UV-Aging) rays that destroy skin elasticity and break down the collagen that gives our skin a youthful glow and smooth wrinkle free appearance. Sunscreens with only UVB SPF ratings are not protecting you from the aging rays and are giving you a false sense of security…so it is time to get sun wise from an anti-aging perspective. Burning is bad, but UVA collagen destruction is worse! Solar Rx is a broad spectrum UVA, UVB and UVC physical block that is also your best anti-aging tool.
